Watermelon Woopie Pies

So I was invited to go to a young adult group thrown by a fellow fire wife (I love them already!). And being me, I hate to go empty handed. So, as I tried to think of what I should bring, I had an inspired moment. The cookies were simple, a favorite recipe of mine that I use all the time. I did a little over 1/3 a cup of oil because the half just makes them WAY too greasy. There are plenty of substitutes for the oil, I just didn't use them this time.

So after mixing the cookie dough, I added 2 different shades of green. I mixed them just so they were evenly spread throughout the dough but not perfectly blended together.
As you can see, I chose to wear gloves when rolling the cookies. The green food coloring was messy and I didn't want it on my hands FOREVER.

I would think you can use any two shades. I just used whatever I had at the house.
You roll them into balls the size of gumballs, but it really depends on how many little sandwiches you want to make.

For the center, you have lots of options. I combined a little pink and red dye to get the really bright pink. Duncan Hines makes mix in flavors if you want to be super creative. I just like the vanilla flavor best.

 Chocolate chips equal seeds

Find two cookies about the same size.
Put a nice bit of frosting on the cookie.
 Sprinkle it with chocolate chips
And you have little WATERMELONS! So cute for summer!

The New Life Begins

So yesterday, the hubby started his first day with Grants Pass Fire Department and from the sound of it, he loved it. All the nerves from the past few weeks disappeared as he found himself in the familiar routine of firehouse life. I'm excited for him-- this has been his dream for years and years. The end goal has always been a true Fire Department job. Volunteering has been great, because he's been able to get experience and still do what he loves, but it doesn't pay the bills. And the Forest Service was great because, again, it was experience.

But it was rough on us both. Our summers were spent at home, waiting for the call for overtime. Summer meant fires and money, which was always needed. And that meant 2 weeks or more for him out on the wildfire line, working his butt off for hours and hours on end. Doing it for days and days without any sort of long term relief. Usually after 14 days, he gets two days off before it starts all over again. That was our life for as long as we've been together. His winters, in the beginning, were spent working part time for our fire dept in Colorado. And when he finally was offered a full time job with the Forest Service in California, it was a no brainer. He took the job and spent the 2008 fire season working long hours during one of the worse fire seasons on record.

It's so weird to think that I'm not a Wildland Fire Wife anymore. I know how to be a Fire Wife. That part of this whole thing is easy. From day one of our relationship, I knew that his life revolved around fire. Now, I'm fitting into the life perfectly. We love everything about the Fire Department family. I'm so excited to get up there and finally live in the area, tour the stations and meet everyone that is a part of our new family. This is all so crazy. Each and every day goes by so slowly. I just want to be up there already, settling into our new home and getting into school and everything.

When he gets home on Thursday, we will be making lots of decisions about retirement, health insurance, life insurance and what not. I can't wait for the better benefits and pay.

Is this really happening?

Late Night Musings

So I'm laying in bed, listening to the hubby snore next to me while I watch 'Deadliest Catch' and I start to think about our future. The day was spent with close friends, celebrating a birthday with a home cooked meal and a few drinks. These are our best friends and they live in the apartment next to us-- totally like Lucy and Ethel. It's incredible and at the same time, it makes me sad that they won't be moving with us to Grants Pass in a few weeks. While yes, they will visit, it won't be the same. When you have an open door policy with your next door neighbors, it's not something that can be duplicated on a visit. I know that I will be okay with this, simply because I'm really good at adapting. It will be harder on the hubby.

Luckily for us, said friends are looking at moving to Medford in the near future, so they will be a short 30 minutes away instead of 4 hours. It will be nice to be able to have our weekly get togethers and random date nights with them. I will, however, miss my ally at the fire dept events.

In other news, I've officially packed my first box for the move. Yes, it was simply sheets, but still, I feel accomplished. I know I will have to pack like crazy (our apartment has a surprising amount of stuff in it) as we go, but it will help that I'm doing it a little at a time.

Until The Hunger Games comes out to theaters, I'm going to wear my hair in the tradition braid every day, because I'm that much of a loser. The last time I was so excited for a movie/book series like this was for Harry Potter. I'm a nerd and proud of it.

So with that, I will say this....

HAPPY HUNGER GAMES!

An Update

Wow, I can't believe how long it's been since I've last posted. We were just getting settled into the new apartment, fire season getting underway and me getting used to the new town. A lot has happened, including a few career changes for the hubby and I.

I'll start off with the hubby, since his changes have been much less severe. The 2010 Fire Season left anyone in wildland fire fighting for whatever overtime could be found. I think he barely broke 500 hours of overtime, which is very rare during fire season. He ended up taking a temporary job 2 hours away just so that we could catch up on our bills and get ahead. So during the week, he stayed in the barracks while I stayed at home and we met back up on the weekend. For us, being separated is not something new. We do it all the time, whether or not it's for 4 days or for three weeks. I'm highly use to being on my own, being independent and taking care of myself. Plus, with him not being home, I was able to focus on school and then focus on him on the days when he was back. For all those wildland fire wives out there, you understand that to make money, you can't stay in a place for very long.

So when the opportunity to apply for the Asheville IHC, he applied. And out of 200 applications, his was picked with 19 others to spend January through May fighting fires in the South. While it's an honor to be chosen and a great chance for overtime in the winter, it was still 6 months apart. But the need for the money was much greater than the idea of being apart for 180 days. So we packed up him and drove him to North Carolina. He spent 6 months making friends and fighting fires all over the South. And by the time he got back, he was ready to focus on schooling. The fires in Arizona and New Mexico kept him busy in the summer and when the season was over, he decided to go to Paramedic school.

The past few months have been filled with studying, clinicals and tests. But not only that, they've been filled with testing for city Fire Departments, which has always been his dreams. And just today (can it be true?) he was offered an official full time job with Grants Pass Fire Department in Grants Pass, Oregon. He is working his last month with the Forest Service. It's so weird that our lives are going to be somewhat normal again. He'll work for 2 days, then have 4 days off. This has never EVER been the case for us. It's going to be a trial having him home all the time, since I've gotten used to being on my own and going to school. But I am looking forward to being able to take vacations and having time with him. These last 2 years have been so busy and so hectic that reconnecting will be amazing.

And as for me, I finally picked on a career path. I, myself, decided to go to Paramedic School. I'm all finished and Nationally Registered, but because of Oregon's requirements for reciprocity, I have to get my AS degree. And I'm only 2 classes away from that, so I'm working my butt off to get that done by August so the hubby and I could move to Grants Pass. For now, he'll be commuting until he's finished with Paramedic School and until I'm finished too. It will be nice because we have time to find a place that we want to be rather than being rushed into finding a place that is just okay. And now, since we have 2 dogs, finding the perfect place in crucial. Plus, I've now got to look into nursing schools in Oregon. Hopefully it will be easier to get into and to get a job up there.

Right now, I'm listening to the new group of students (including the hubby) study at my dinner table for the medical test that I'm proctoring on Saturday. There is so much we have to button up-- changing jobs, insurance, life insurance, retirement and job hunting-- but we are looking forward to it all. With a new car and a new start, who knows where we will be in a few months?

Sittin', Waitin' Wishin'

I feel horrible for saying things like this, but I hope we get some fires.

And soon.

It's ridiculous that a lot of people's incomes rely completely and totally on a busy fire season. My husband works as a wildland fire fighter and we have a hard time making ends meet until fire season rolls around. We rely on those large checks in between May and September to pay of the bills we've accumulated in the winter.

I don't make enough to really make much of a difference when it comes to money. My small amount of money gets me through month to month, but any extra expenses are a no-no. Which means no trips out to see my lovely niece, no extra driving, no outdoor furniture to enjoy the nice weather. I can't even go garage saling right now.

Le sigh. Let's hope a resource order gets in here pretty quick.

Anyone need a Type 2 Incident Management Team?

A little change of pace

For today, instead of talking about me, per say, I'm going to review a product I've come to love, even though I've only purchased it a few weeks ago.

As a wife on a very tight budget, who also is a little in love with make up, it's hard for me to justify buying something for myself unless I either have a coupon or have found a really good deal on it. That's what happened when I found Eyes Lips Face make up.

I'm really shocked that I was just now hearing about it, since, as Ursula put it, "I always was a girl with an eye for a bargain." I pride myself on my excellent ability to shop around and find the best price. I watch for sales, coupons and will even wait for something to maybe go on clearance before I even think about purchasing it. For this, I both thank and blame my mother.

There have been things that I've really wanted, but due to my frugal ways, I've missed out on it. But, I take that as a sign that I didn't really need it in the first place.

Anyway, I was on one of my favorite deals pages http://www.woot.com/ and saw someone post a coupon code for E.L.F. I'd never heard of it before, so interested, I hopped over to the page. When I saw just how inexpensive everything was, I was both concerned and very interested.

I began my research on it in a way that anyone would, by Googling it. The ELF website had reviews from customers, but I wanted to see if there were any complaints that weren't posted. I felt very confident in purchasing a few products, knowing that if I didn't like what I bought, it would only be 15 bucks down the drain. And with the coupon code 'Carolina' I was able to save half off my purchase, so the 6.95 for shipping wasn't a bad thing with what I was saving with the coupon.

I ordered one therapeutic conditioning balm in vanilla, nail polish removal pads, the blending eyeshadow brush, the Natural Radiance Blusher in Coy, slant tweezers, Super Glossy Lip Shine SPF 15 in Candlelight, nail polish in Nude, Chocolate, and Mint Cream, the dual pencil sharpener, the quad eyeshadow in Brownstone, the Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15 in Ivory, the concealer in Ivory, the eyeshadow duo in Berry mix and the Eyelid Primer for a grand total of 14.95, with half off the normal price. For all the I received, I couldn't pass up the price. We'll start with the nail polish. The colors, all true to the website, are beautiful, albeit thin. The Mint Cream is a little closer to blue than green and the Nude looks best with a single coat, though it does take a few coats to get a nice even layer with the bright colors. It can get a little chunky in the bottle, but if you shake it a few times, it's not bad. I would HIGHLY recommend putting on a top coat, so to make the paint last longer and to help with the fact that the polish chips fairly easily. This product lasts only a few days without a top coat, but it can last up to two weeks with one on.

Chocolate, Mint Cream, and Nude

Three coats, two coats, and one coat of polish

Three coats of polish with a top coat.

The tinted moisturizer was one of the things I had been looking for, with the summer approaching. I don't like the heavy feel of foundation in the summer, so I usually wear a tinted moisturizer when it's hot. I now wear this product frequently, in love with the way it feels and smells. I know the whole smell thing is a little weird, but this product has a unique smell of sweet oranges, which makes it even better on. It goes on light, stays on all day and leaves you feeling fresh. The color is almost as light as the makeup feels, but gives me just enough coverage to make my skin even. I put it on and was outside all day in the sun and didn't burn at all! I didn't even need to put additional sunscreen on at all during the day. I also recommend this product as well.

Top is the Eyelid Primer, middle is the moisturizer, and the bottom is the Tone Correcting Concealer.

The little dot in the moisturizer and the shiny next to it is it rubbed in, nice and clear.

The Tone Correcting Concealer is a great product, but takes a second coat to really provide good coverage. While it isn't thin, it just needed a little more product to correct my redness. It has the same sweet orange smell as the moisturizer, which is very unique to the ELF line. I love it and will use it in conjunction with the tint above.

The first is the concealer, the shiny spot is it rubbed in.

The conditioning balm in vanilla is as amazing product much like Softlips, but with a shine. It goes on smooth and lasts long enough to only need a coat or two every few hours. It's not too thick that it clumps and no so thin that it won't stay on. It's kissable and even with the slight shine, my husband doesn't feel so bad using it. And for a dollar price, I prefer it to Softlips. I will make a point to order another one the next time I place an order.

The radiance blusher in coy is a darker than I usually go, but it's still very pretty. I will be sending this off to my mother, who prefers the darker shades of blush. But I still enjoy the consistency of the product and how bright it is on the cheeks. I'll order a different color next time, but I would recommend the product itself.

The Eyelid Primer is a wondrous find for anyone who loves the more expensive products like Eyeshadow Primers from Urban Decay or Smashbox. You need very little product to really get the entire lid covered with product. I only dip the brush once for both eyes. I actually prefer this to Urban Decay's product, which I used fairly often. For a dollar, this product is a steal, and works better than anything I've ever used as a primer. Although it doesn't have the same sweet orange smell, you use so little of it that you don't even notice the makeupy smell.

The first is eyeshadow with the primer first, the second in shadow with no primer and above that is the primer by itself.

The eye shadows, both the quad and the duo, have brightly colored pigment that lasts an incredibly long time. With a primer, I wore the shadows without any creasing or major loss of color. The colors, after 6 hours of wear, were still what they had been when I originally put them on. Can be used either wet or dry, depending on the look you are going for.
Last, but not at all least, are the tools, including the tweezers, blending brush, sharpeners and nail polish pads. The slant tweezers are better than any I've tried in the past and for the price, once they aren't sharp you can toss them and by another pair. The blending brush does exactly what it says, though I don't know how it differs from the more expensive three dollar version. The nail polish remover pads are AMAZING! They smell like heaven, without the horrible awful distinct acetone. Although only one pad per hand is about all the use you can get, they work as well as any thing else I've used. They are great, but you don't get enough. Again, for a dollar, you can always order more!

The best thing about ELF is the pretty much flat rate prices across the board. The normal line is a dollar, with the studio collection 3 dollars and the mineral collection 5 dollars. I've only tried the normal line, but my next purchase will be of some of the mineral line. I'm interested to see if the coverage is similar to that of Bare Minerals.

Whether you are on a budget or not, this stuff is worth buying. And with the plentiful number of emails from the company once you do buy, the deals never end. You can always get a good deal from Eyes Lips Face, but when you sign up for their website, you can make a good deal even better.

YAY... And now the nerves kick in.

I took my last final tonight and took a nice, relaxing shower once I got home.

And I noticed that I was biting my nails, which I haven't done in a while. I thought I was over being nervous, since I did fairly well on my tests.

But now starts the wait for Glee Callbacks.

Supposedly, no one has heard anything. I'm hoping that we'll hear something soon, because the waiting is killing me. I really want to know if they want to add a mute to the mix!

Come on Fox, Lemme know soon!
